ROZZANO: THE INTERCONNECTION PROJECT BETWEEN THE CAP TREATMENT PLANT AND THE TLR POWER PLANT BY ATMOS STARTS
An agreement has been signed for the implementation of an experimental project that will enable the exchange of electrical and thermal energy between the two local entities, enhancing the renewable energy resources obtained from the purification process.
The treatment plant in Rozzano, one of CAP Group’s 40 plants managed by CAP Evolution—the CAP Group company dedicated to Waste, Wastewater, and Energy—will be interconnected with the district heating plant of Atmos, part of the GETEC Group and already connected to the city's district heating network. The initiative aims to create an energy exchange between the two structures, optimizing electricity and heat management, maximizing efficiency, and reducing environmental impact.
On one hand, the district heating plant will supply electricity generated by its cogenerator to the purification plant, which has recently increased its treatment capacity, meeting the facility’s energy needs and ensuring energy coverage in case of infrastructure downtime or high consumption. Additionally, the plant produces biogas from sludge digestion, used to stabilize the temperature of the digesters and optimize biogas production. This will further enhance the efficiency of the purification plant.
On the other hand, the heat generated by the combustion of biogas in the digesters of CAP Evolution will be transferred to the district heating network, contributing to the supply of completely renewable heat.
"This project brings an experimental value but also serves as a tangible example of how our commitment to sustainable innovation helps improve local infrastructures and optimize resources. By interconnecting the Rozzano treatment plant with Atmos’ district heating system, we will maximize the efficiency of our plants, but above all, we will give new value to thermal energy that, until now, remained unused, in line with the principles of a circular economy," says Alessandro Reginato, who has taken on the role of Director General of CAP Evolution starting January 1, 2025.
"The integration of the Rozzano treatment plant with our district heating network represents a significant milestone in our path toward a more sustainable and efficient energy model," emphasizes Giovanni Pontrelli, CEO of GETEC Italia. "This initiative is only one of the many examples of applied innovation, but it also shows how industrial collaboration is essential to creating efficient and concrete solutions that can shape a more sustainable future, reducing environmental impact and enhancing local infrastructures while contributing to the energy independence of our communities."
The project offers significant benefits in economic, environmental, and reliability terms. First and foremost, it will allow the treatment plant to ensure greater energy resilience and stability, reducing dependence on the external electricity grid. Additionally, the contribution of renewable heat will help further decarbonize the district heating network. According to estimates by the European Directive on Renewable Energy, each MWh of renewable heat used for district heating contributes to reducing the use of fossil fuels, significantly cutting CO₂ emissions.
The project, which will undergo a first development phase in 2024, involves a heat exchange capacity for residual thermal energy extracted from wastewater, with an estimated amount of 9,000 MWh per year.
